A Clearer View of Your Eye Health
At our practice, we utilize Optomap digital retinal imaging, an advanced system designed by Optos that captures detailed images of your retina within seconds—without the inconvenience of dilation or side effects.
Not only does this quick and comfortable procedure improve your experience, but it also provides our doctors with high-resolution digital images of your retina. By keeping these images on file, we can accurately track changes in your retinal health over time, aiding in the early detection and management of conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy.

Seeing Inside The Eye
The retina is a delicate layer of photoreceptors (rods and cones) and nerves, crucial for allowing us to perceive the world around us. Remarkably, it is one of the few places in the body where certain diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, blood cancers, and infections, can be identified non-invasively. Due to its thin and sensitive structure, the retina is particularly susceptible to tears and holes—especially in near-sighted individuals—which can lead to serious issues like retinal detachments.
To effectively screen for diseases or abnormalities, our optometrists need to thoroughly examine the entire inside your eye each year. We offer two methods to ensure comprehensive retinal evaluation: dilation or Optomap imaging.
Without dilation, our doctors can see approximately 20% of your retina. A small pupil restricts the view, much like looking through a keyhole into a room. Dilation, achieved by applying special eye drops, expands the pupil size and provides a complete view of the retina. However, dilation typically requires about 20 minutes to take effect, followed by 4-6 hours of sensitivity to light and blurred near vision.
As an excellent alternative, our clinic proudly offers the Optomap Daytona retinal imaging system—the first clinic in the Southwest Metro to do so. This technology quickly captures detailed images of your retina, providing our doctors with comprehensive information without the inconvenience and side effects of dilation.

(Not so) Fun Fact
The Optomap retinal imaging system was invented by a determined father after his young son tragically lost vision in one eye. During a traditional dilated eye exam, the boy was uncooperative, preventing the optometrist from obtaining clear views of a retinal tear. Earlier detection could have enabled timely treatment and preserved his vision.
Motivated by this experience, his father—a brilliant engineer—set out to develop an easier and more patient-friendly way to detect retinal issues. Thanks to his innovation, patients and eye doctors around the world now benefit from quick, comfortable, and comprehensive retinal examinations.
